I've seen these more often in Japanese places (and in Japan) than in Chinese places or Hong Kong but the British Museum's gift shop calls them Feng Shui cats.

    Peculiar hybrid Sino-Japanese cultural remixes, these felines :-)

    Definitely anime cartoon-like and non-traditional in design, yet with the ideograms for “Feng Shui” on the box.

    Tradtional "Beckoning Cat" design as found in Japan:

    Feng Shui is a practice that is still quite Chinese, and is generally ignored in Japan, hence maybe the Japanese subtext on the boxes: ”[The cat] that brings luck”…

    My understanding is that the "Beckoning Cat" is a seasonal auspicious item in China, mostly sold around the New Year, whilst it’s available year-round in Japan.
