X-Factor Brings Families Together

xfactorTelevision critics have said that ITV’s X Factor is nothing but prime-time Karaoke for morons. It attracts wannabe celebrities who have no more talent than the average Karaoke singer at your local pub.

But one factor that cannot be denied is the show’s popularity. This Saturday’s final attracted a staggering 20 million viewers. And these viewers are not limited to one particular age group; they are from across the generations.

X Factor has resulted in many families sitting down together to watch television in a way that many observers have said was dead in our fragmented, digital age. Grannies and teenage grandchildren are enthusiastically tuning in to see if the latest ‘boy next door’ wannabe is going to make it through to the next round.

While there are many X Factor contestants who have no more talent than a potato there are and have been some outstanding performers and performances. These are ordinary people from normal walks of life. They bring hope and optimism to many who aspire to go from singing to themselves in their bedroom mirror to performing to thousands at Wembley stadium.

So, whatever your opinion of X Factor there is no denying that it is a TV phenomenon that is bringing families together in front of their televisions in a way that has not been seen since Bruce Forsyth’s Generation Game.
