Top 5 Things People Forget When Moving Home

moving_home_philipc_flickrA recent survey asked a cross-section of the UK’s most popular home removals companies ‘What are the most common things that people forget when they move home?

The survey provided some interesting results like the family from Devon who left their Parrot locked in their old house and the parents in Berkshire who failed to inform their son, who was travelling in India, of their new address.

Motoring Documents: Many people reportedly overlook the legal requirement to change their address on their driving licence an vehicle registration documents. It’s not until they need to produce their documents, maybe for a speeding offence, that they become aware of their oversight. If you don’t let the DVLA know of your change of address you could be liable for a fine.

TV Licence: Another piece of documentation that needs to be updated with your new address is your TV licence. Many people overlook this fact and only find out when the TV detector van is outside their new home.

Turning off the Power and Water: When leaving a property it is always worthwhile turning off the power and water. If new occupants will not be taking up residence for some time this will avoid any potential billing arguments and it is always worthwhile taking an electricity meter reading before you leave.

Where they put the kettle: The single most important item when you move into a new home has got to be your kettle. Without it you can’t make a cup of tea or coffee for those helpful removals men.  Its always worthwhile taking the kettle, some mugs, tea-bags and milk to your new home separate from the rest of your household belongings.

Spare keys for new owners: Many people move on to pastures new but fail to leave all of their old house keys with the new owners. It’s important to ensure that the new owners are provided with all of the keys that exist for what is now their property.

If you are moving home always label your boxes and make certain that you don’t leave any pets behind.

When I moved into my first house, it was days before I found the kettle. I offered the removal men a cup of tea, only to find that I had no idea where the kettle was.

When I moved from that house I did manage to leave the cat behind, although it was due to the cat deciding to run off as soon as he saw the cat box. It was two weeks before one of my old neighbours managed to catch him!

One very common thing that people forget to turn off while leaving their homes is FAN or AC, at least we always forgot or it stayed always at the back of our minds, whether we turned it off or not. Only to arrive back and find that it was turned off..lol! Nice list and it was fun to read. Thanks!

When we moved in to our new house, it needed decorating so we decided to decorate before we moved everything it.
I took the kettle, cups, milk, sweeteners and a tea towel with me so we coud have drinks while decorating. Three hours in to it all we decided to have a drink only to realise we have left the tea bags and the coffee at home!
As a joke my partner then bought me a masive bag of 1650 teabags. Needless to say were still using them!
