The Worst Taxi Driver Ever

I must start off by saying that this post is not really about a taxi driver. It’s about a minicab driver. I understand that taxi drivers are licensed professionals whereas some minicab drivers (but not all) are unlicensed and unpopular with the licensed taxi drivers whose business they steal.

Anyway, back to my story. My girlfriend and I were headed off for a night out at a house party across the other side of town. Being a busy Saturday night we had trouble getting through to the various reputable local taxi firms that we would routinely use so we resorted to the firm that my girlfriend refers to as ‘comedy cabs’. The reason she awarded them this confidence boosting moniker is the variety of run down, beaten up old bangers that their drivers appear to use.

We managed to contact comedy cabs and they dispatched a car and driver to pick us up. The car arrived quickly enough but things were not looking good when we got in the back seat and discovered stuffing sticking out of the seat covers and only one working seat-belt. We’d have ordinarily given up and called another cab but it was getting late so we decided to risk it.

The driver or the car had a real problem travelling in a straight line. He kept accelerating ferociously then braking sharply, throwing myself and my girlfriend forward violently. He was exceeding the speed limits on roads that were restricted to 30 and 40 miles per hour, he drifted into the path of oncoming traffic at a right hand bend and mounted the kerb when turning left.

The final straw came when we encountered some roadwords at a T-junction. There was a clear road sign telling drivers that there was no right turn, but our mini-cab driver ignored the directive and turned right anyway, straight into the path of an oncoming bus. If it wasn’t for the quick response of the bus driver we would have been involved in a serious pile up.

It was after this frightening incident that I lost it. I shouted at the driver to pull over and let us out immediately. My girlfriend was crying and shaking and I was livid that this half-wit driver had put our lives at risk. And to top it all off he tried to insist that we paid him.

Without doubt this was the worst driver and the scariest taxi ride I have ever had.
