Surfing UK Style
When most people think of the UK they think about the weather and the fact that it is not hot all year round. Despite this there is however a very active and constantly growing surf community in the UK and I guess that’s why we wear clothing like Quiksilver wetsuits. The most popular spots for surfing are in the south-west corner of the country in the counties of Devon and Cornwall. However there are some other areas of the country that lend themselves to surfing.
Surf clubs are becoming more and more popular amongst young people in Britain and due to the fact that nearly everyone all over the country can reach a beach within 2 hours drive surf clubs are now more popular than ever. The British Surfing Association list a lot of information about surf clubs as well as surf schools and competition all over the UK.
As mentioned above the south-east is not the only place people can enjoy surfing in the UK. There are many other places such as Saltburn, Cleveland in the north-east of England. It is one of the original surfing spot in the UK and offers some good waves that will suit beginners.
With 2 miles worth of beach when the tide is at its lowest Watergate Bay located in Cornwall is a great place to visit if you want to escape the crowds of Newquay. There are a few schools and academies here that teach surfing and are worth checking out if you live in the area.
If you’re in Scotland there’s one main place you should be heading for and that’s Pease Bay, Borders. The centre of Scotland surf scene Pease Bay has some nice breaks for both beginners and more advanced riders. The beach break will be most suited to those learning the sport whilst the break across the reef will suit the more advanced surfers.
