I Need a New Model Boyfriend

audi_a3_cab_200-122My boyfriend works for a UK contract hire company supplying all sorts of cars, vans and trucks mainly to business customers. He loves his job, which is a good thing, but he can’t stop talking about it. He spends his days road testing cars and then promoting them to prospective clients so you think that by the time he gets home he’d have had enough of automobiles.

Every night I have to listen to him enthusiastically ranting on about the latest hot deal available from his leasing company. He is a complete petrol-head (I think the Americans call them gear heads). He watches every motoring programme and motor sport programme produced and even buys countless DVDs that present anything related to cars. How to restore old Jaguars, road crashes and police chases are in his DVD library. At weekends he does take me out, but only if we are going to some sort of motoring event like Glorious Goodwood. We’ve never been for a romantic meal and we don’t even go to the movies unless the film involves cars.

For our vacation last year he decided that we would go to the U.S.A. I was really excited as I’d never been to America before. But he had decided we would be going to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Races at the Daytona 500. So I spent all of my holiday in America breathing exhaust fumes, listening to petrol and gear heads talk incessantly about cars, engines, brake horse power and other incredibly boring topics. What’s more, I managed to put on 10 pounds in weight due to my eating nothing but fast food for the duration.

So I am now undecided about the future of this relationship. My man used to be very caring and attentive, back when we first started going out. He can be thoughtful and considerate, but he also has a tendency to become obsessive about things, especially cars. I’ve wondered if I would be having the same doubts if his interest matched my own, but I somehow can’t see him taking much interest in shopping, clothes and make-up. And there is very little chance that I will be developing a keen interest in automobiles any time soon.

I suppose it’s time for an open and honest talk to decide the future of this relationship. I need to tell him that I am really not interested in going to every motoring event on the U.K. calendar. Nor am I happy to spend my holiday breathing petrol ad exhaust fumes. I want to be wined and dined and I want to relax in the sunshine when I’m on holiday. Instead I’ve become an expert on the latest Audi Contract Hire deals and the performance figures of various BMWs. Perhaps it really is time for a new model boyfriend.

This post title gave me a laugh. I have a similar partner who is absolutely obsessive about Koi Carp. Luckily he doesn’t work with fish but that is all he talks and thinks about. He even forgot our anniversary this year - but he always remembers when he got his first Koi Carp. I think I need to have a little chat with my man…
