Blog your way to website visibility

SEO and SEM are moveable feasts. What works well this month to make your website visible might not do such a good job in a few weeks’ time.

B2B SME? Get yourself a blog and reap the rewards!

One enduring way to help get your website noticed - both by search engines and prospects - is to include a blog as part of your website. Regular, relevant posts to a B2B blog can work wonders for your website’s visibility.

But why does a blog help your site get seen?

  • Search engines respond well to websites that are updated regularly, whether it’s new content or editing. If you write a blog post once a week, search engine bots notice. Because it is obviously alive and well, they begin to ‘crawl’ your website regularly. This’ll help your ranking.
  • People also respond well to fresh content. Imagine a shop that never changes its window display - would you keep going back there or would you prefer to visit a shop whose window display was exciting and dynamic?

A B2B blog’s relevance also contributes towards better visibility. If your website is all about office supplies and your blog posts concentrate on office supplies, search engines will ’see’ the relevance of the connection and bring various algorithms into play to classify and rate your website accordingly.

It’s fairly fast and easy to add a Wordpress blog to your site, so your web developer shouldn’t charge much to install and customise one for you.

Writing regular blog posts is another story, and many businesses take on a freelance copywriter to take on the responsibility. Most good UK copywriters charge between £35 and £45 an hour, and should be able to research and write a 300 word blog entry for you in an hour or less.

Whether you write your B2B blog posts yourself or hand over to a copywriter, keep an eye on your webstats. Provided your posts are well written, relevant, entertaining and informative, you should see an increase in visitor traffic within a few weeks.
